ICC YAAF: Transitioning between private practice and In-house careers

01 Jun 2023

Singapore English
Start: 18.00 (SGT time) | 12.00 (CEST) || End: 20.00 (SGT time) | 14.00 (CEST)

It is not uncommon for many lawyers to mull the prospect of a move from private practice to in-house at some stage in their careers. The promises of predictability and stability, the lure of a work-life balance, and the opportunity to contribute to an organisation’s strategic direction, are difficult to resist.

In this panel discussion, 4 individuals discuss their experiences moving from private practice to an in-house or business role within an organisation (and, in some cases, back to practice) – and address burning questions that young lawyers may have.

We explore the motivations and experiences of 4 individuals who have moved from private practice to in-house and business roles (and, in some cases, back to practice). In doing so, we seek to address questions commonly asked by young lawyers and practitioners, including the following:

  • What are the key differences between practice and in-house, and what are the key skills required to excel in an in-house role?
  • What is the range of in-house or business opportunities available to pure disputes practitioners?
  • Is the transition from in-house back to private practice smooth, and what are the key difficultes faced in doing so?

This event is organised by ICC YAAF and sponsored by WongPartnership LLP.

What is ICC YAAF?

At ICC, we believe that through training and mentorship, we can mould the next generation of leading international arbitration and ADR experts. Through the ICC Young Arbitration and ADR Forum (YAAF) network, we are able to better inform, connect and inspire young professionals with interests in dispute resolution and dispute avoidance.

Open to those aged 40 and under, YAAF provides opportunities for individuals to gain knowledge, develop their skills and understand ICC’s arbitral procedure and other dispute resolution services. Throughout the world, ICC YAAF organises a number of educational and social events that allow young professionals to discover best practices, discuss topical issues, network and create meaningful connections with experienced practitioners.
